Will $6000 Return You To Nursing?

Back on 15 January 2008 the Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd announced the “Bringing Nurses Back into the Workforce program”.

Over the next 5 years $39.4 million will be provided to reduce the nursing shortage and to attract 8,750 of the estimated 30,000 qualified nurses who left nursing, back into nursing at public and private hospitals and residential aged care homes.

It is part of a program that will provide $138.9 million to the Health and Ageing and Education portfolios.

To entice eligible nurses to return to nursing, a cash bonus of up to $6000.00 is now being offered to those that return on or after the 15 January 2008. The first bonus payment of $3,000 will be paid after six months and the remaining $3000.00 being paid after 18 months.

Did I claim the $6000.00? Answer: No - I missed it by eight days! But not to worry!

I hope you found this article to be useful. For those that do re-enter nursing, perhaps you could let me know how you get on. All the best, take care and look after your back - Peter.

Peter,

That's a GREAT incentive. Sorry you missed out on it. My daughter continues to love working as a Registered Nurse. :D My other daughter is settled into her new job as a medical records supervisor. She moved to a smaller town and is much happier.

Glad you liked my new template.

Blessings, JJ

Hi JJ! It would be nice if it was more but it's better than nothing!

You have to give it to Prime Minister Rudd, he kept his promise. Now we will have to wait and see if this program works. We are all keeping our fingers crossed.

It's great to hear that your daughters are doing so well. I wish them the very best. The same goes to you too!

Take Care,
Peter

Oh what a shame you missed all that dough!
So you have a shortage too eh? Here in the US it's going to be cataclysmic soon. As the bayboomers retire the system will be seriously overloaded. It's already started.

Peter 9/08/08 4:03 PM

Hi Windyridge! Being a babyboomer, I realise I may have to work well beyond the average retirement age. Taking that into account, nursing part-time when I do retire will allow us to suppliment our pensions. As long as the body holds together, that is!

Take Care,
Peter

You gave great insight into the nursing career in NSW.

Your work is truely appreciated. Enbroaden our understanding of the health system

Hi Roentarre and welcome. I should be the one thanking you. For anyone else reading this, you MUST visit his site, as you will certainly be blown away by his photography. It is out of this world!

Obviously I'm not returning to nursing due to being blind enough that doctor's chicken-scratching handwriting looks even more like Egyptian hieroglyphs lol.
But the big thing to entice more people into nursing and nurses back to nursing would be -
Make all nursing courses at uni totally fee-free.
Standardise nursing criteria and wages across the nation as the same, with higher wages and penalties for remote area nursing, obviously.

This program is a good start but hopefully there'll be more ideas to keep the nurses after 18 mths ;)

Does it count if I was a nurse in a former life?

Apologies for my lame joke. That sounds like an awesome idea. Here in the U.S. nurses are in short supply too. You necessary people you. Thank you for choosing such a helpful profession.

I've seen a few good jobs on bluecollar.com.au .. hopefully we'll see more nurses getting into it. Great article!

Seems like you have the same problems with the nursing shortage as we do here in Canada. As you know my wife is a registered nurse (critcal care)and I can tell you ... you just missed a pretty sweet deal. It would always be nicer if it was more but heck, at least something was offerred. Too bad you missed out my friend. And like you, my wife will have to do the same thing come retirement years. I think alot of nurses will have to.
Take care.

Hi Jayne! I've been told my handwriting is just like a doctor's. It comes in handy sometimes that no one can read it.

There are a lot of things they could do to put an end to the nursing shortage and getting rid of fees would be one of them.

While I'm on that, if they ever wake up and do it, they should do the same for people wanting to be doctors.

Take Care
Peter

Hi San! Well you could try, but I don't like your chances.

I ask - Would nurses from a former life want to do nursing again? Me - I would but I can't speak for the rest of them.

Take Care,
Peter

Hi Madelyn! I see your advertising a couple of nursing jobs in New South Wales. I hope you fill them.

Hi The Supplicant! Yes, I plan to nurse on a casual basis after retiring. Hope to do four days a fortnight but that depends on how the body is going.

Mind you, if I drop during a shift, I'll be in the right place.

The money will certainly come in handy and the other thing that will keep me going, is because I love doing it.

All the very best to you and your better half.

Take Care,
Peter

Sounds like Australia has some pretty good incentives! Too bad you missed out on it.

I don't know about the nursing field incentives here now, I've been out of the loop too long since my sister retired, but they used to be pretty good.

Have a wonderful day!

Swubird 13/08/08 11:56 AM

Peter:

Sounds like a good idea. Of course, over here in the so-called great land of economic opportunity, we prefer to stick with a shortage of nurses, doctors, technicians, clinical laboratory scientists, inhalation therapists, and all other health care specialists. Maybe your government should talk to our government before I die!

Happy trails my friend.

Peter 13/08/08 10:57 PM

Hi The Muse! Like I said, "Not to worry", but it will be interesting to see if this program works. I'll try and find out how many have taken up the offer to date.

I did a search for incentives such as this in the USA but haven't had any luck so far. I'll keep you posted if I do.

Take Care,
Peter

Peter 13/08/08 11:10 PM

Hi Swubird! Priorities in both our countries seem to have gone astray when it comes to getting it right with nursing and healthcare. The only way out is for us to remain eternally healthy! Good luck to the both of us and our families!

Take Care,
Peter

Hey. It was your page's layout that caught my eye. I like the way you let your thoughts flow. I've got to get back to my next chapter in the Kangaroo Rodeo, but just thought I'd say hello.
