Father's Day Downunder
F
rom the time you took in your first breath, our world changed for the better. Eyes now clear of milky dew, I see myself in the reflection of your squinting gaze. Blindly holding onto my finger with your hand, my eyes begin to fill with your mother’s tears as you settle at the breast. You are the first of three and with time, you will all grow strong and make us proud. Robert, Stephen and Christopher will be your names.
A
ll three separated by time, will finally arrive at the place we call home. Never grand but always welcoming. Timid but wanting, our gifts from above settle into our care. Little sleep and long nights await us all but in the end, our three sons settle into the warmth of friend’s gifts. We dare not leave but we must. Looking back for the third time, we trust you will sleep well under the protection of the ones that hold you dear.
T
he morning light reveals you still in my arms. Reprimanded I hold you up as I take in the air. Time to hand you over to the one that brought you into this world, as I seek out sustenance for the long day ahead. Coming back I find you feeding, warm in your mothers arms. Days roll into months and finally our firstborn takes his first cautious steps. Two brothers not yet born will follow this same path.
H
ere we now stand much older, much wiser and a little poorer. But our three boys are now men, ready and able to make their own mark. As each one leaves, the home becomes quieter. Finally the day comes, when all three have departed. But walking into their rooms, I still feel their presence. Should we have stopped them from leaving? I look back to my time and realise it’s the best thing. Freedom is what we all seek.
E
arly days away from home bring new experiences, both good and bad. Thank heavens we’re only a phone call away. Helping out where we can, we finally see all three settled far from home. The youngest is making a living out in the west with a mate. The eldest two are sharing costs up north. The partner of one, head strong and pretty, is the girl we love to call our daughter. No doubt there will be more to come.
R
eminiscing, I hope the mistakes that I made as a father will be forgiven. I look forward to the day when you become fathers and watch your children grow as we have watched you grow. Knowing that you have become good men with great hearts is great comfort as we approach our twilight years. We have said it before and I’ll remind you again, we will always love you even after we have gone.

Happy Father's Day. Your children are very lucky to have you as a father, one that can write openly about his feelings as you do.
The world needs more men like you, not that they aren't out there, they just have a hard time expressing their gentler side.
Hi Janeywan! The day has started off really well, with my eldest son ringing me to say Happy Father's Day.
Thank you for your very kind remarks. They mean a lot to me!
Take Care,
Peter
Peter:
That was a great tribute to fathers everywhere. I especially liked the way you spelled Father down the side of the page. Very creative. I agree with janeywan. Your children are lucky to have you as their father. Now, can I borrow the car?
Happy trails.
Peter, how beautiful! Like Swubird, I though how neat it was to begin each remembrance with the letters of FATHER. I love also how you honor your children on a day that's meant to honor you. That says everything about the kind of father you are.
Happy Fathers Day, Peter! Hope you had a fabulous day!!!
Hi Swubird and thank you. I wasn't quite sure about going ahead with the capital letters considering all the different browsers out there. But after checking how it would look via browsershots I went ahead with it.
As for my children being lucky, they best answer that one. Now, can you borrow my car....sure thing!
Take Care,
Peter
Hi Kathy and thank you too! I see that plastic bag is still up in that tree. I was contemplating whether I should come over there and take it down. Best not, hey!
Yes, my children are very special to me and I wanted to highlight that fact here. I hope they get to read it.
Take Care,
Peter
Hi Moonshadow and thank you! The wife and I had a quiet day at home. The other good thing was that I received a father's day card from my children which topped my day off very nicely.
Take Care,
Peter
How very beautiful, Peter. You have written this with so much feeling, you brought tears to my eyes. I can feel the love in your heart.
Thank you.
Very touching, I wish I still have a father to wish him a happy father's day.
Keep up your good work and good spirit.

Hi Lynda and thank you! It is very rare that I become somewhat emotional over something I've written. But when it does happen, it is always when I write about my children.
Take Care,
Peter
Hi Matahari-matahari. This year was the first time my wife wasn't able to say Happy Father's Day to her father, as he recently pasted away.
I'm sorry for your loss and I do not look forward to the day that I can't say the same thing to my father.
All the best and take care,
Peter
I have an AWARD for you over at my blog!

Hey Peter,
Belated Happy Father's day :D!
Such a lovely post, Pete! It moved me!
I could really feel your love for your baby boys :)! I can see that you loved being a father and how proud you are of them...
My brother left home last week too; so I know the feeling of going to his room and still feel his presence!
After this weekend, it will be my turn to leave the nest...
You are an incredible human being, and your family is very lucky to have had you as its Head :D!
You are Top!
Cheers
Peter, what a beautiful, loving post!!! Your father is blessed to have you as his son. :D And your children are blessed to have you as a caring father. :D The pattern will continue on and that is the biggest blessing of all.
Blessings! JJ
Hi Moonshadow. This will top my fathers day off very nicely, thank you!!
Take Care,
Peter
Hi Max and thank you! The second eldest is doing especially well at the moment. He's topping the class in his chosen field and it won't be long before he gets that important piece of paper.
Besides us feeling their presence, long after they've gone, there's also the dirty socks and undies we still keep finding in the nooks and crannies of their rooms. But I'm sure your brother wouldn't have done that.
So you're off as well! A sad day, but look at the positives. Freedom, independence and bills that you can call your own.
Take Care,
Peter
Hi JJ and thank you. I'm sure my father is proud of all of us, as we are of him.
As for blessings, they abound! Big and small!
Take Care,
Peter
A little late, Happy Father's Day!
Beautiful post Peter! You always know just what to say and how to say it.
Have a wonderful weekend!
Hey Peter,
Congratulations to your second eldest :D! Needless to say that you must be really proud!!
LOL LOL LOL "dirty socks and undies" I know what you mean...yes, my brother did the same (and he still comes by to drop his laundry) *nodding*!
"Freedom, independence and bills that you can call your own." - LOL LOL this was a good one! And so true as well!
