Family First

Children, where would we be without them, I ask you? For better or for worse, for richer or poorer, they will always come first in our lives.

It seems like only yesterday that our three possums were running around in nappies, and the next minute, having children of their own.

Well, one of them that is, and who would have thought the middle of the three, and the smallest of the bunch, would beat his brothers to the punch!

Mind you, it’s taken him almost thirty years and heaven knows how long it will take the other two! They may well be in their late thirties or even forties before they start to replicate, if at all!

Bearing in mind what my grandmother used to say, “Different strokes for different folks. Usually up and down!” why is it that some couples start having children early in life, or, leave it until later on in life, or, decide not to have children at all? It can’t be all about money, can it?

For us, having started our family with next to nothing just a few short years out of high school, we may, touch wood, live long enough to see our great grandchildren or even, great great-grandchildren if luck continues to be on our side.

To be continued…

Very nice family picture. I started my family young so I could be young with them. Having 'things' wasn't a priority, we had a 'make do' attitude. My dad lived to enjoy his great grandchildren and they got the opportunity to know and love hiim too.

Children are, no doubt, God's blessing..We are waiting anxiously for that blessing..:-)
BTW Nice pic:-)

Hi Moonshadow! We were that flat broke when we first got married we just had enough petrol to get to the honeymoon apartment! The thing that saved us eventually was that the lady we were renting our unit from only wanted fifty dollars a week. She was a godsend and so was spaghetti on toast!

Peter

Peter:

A nice looking family. I am a grand dad. Can't believe it. Where did the years go? One other daughter is married and trying to have children. The youngest daughter is engaged. It looks like we're going to be a big family. I'm glad you said it wasn't all about money. I was beginning to worry.

happy trails.

Peter 20/10/09 10:28 AM

Hi JJ and thank you heaps! Any chance of you becoming a great great grandparent one day? We will just have to wait and see, hey?

Take Care,
Peter

Hi Swubird! Do you have any tips on being a good grandfather? Is spoiling allowed? Of course it is!

We only have one life, so we might as well spoil them rotten, with parental approval, while we can.

Of course this includes spending quality time with them as often as we can!

Take Care,
Peter

Hi Peter!

Awww, such a beautiful family picture *tender face*! I loved it!! And baby Emmi looks so happy :D!

Now, you ask why some couples begin to have children later than others...well, some use money as an explanation, but I do not think that is it (because children are a driving force to move forward in life). I believe they reproduce later because they are scared of parenthood.
Others do not reproduce earlier because their body is not ready (for there is a time for everything in life) or simply it is not time yet.

When my parents generated me, they lived comfortably (in Mozambique) but after the revolution everything was taken from them (just like everything was taken from everybody at the time) and when they came to Portugal they had to start all over again...still they generated my brother; and they'd generate more if my mom's health had allowed it. We (my brother and I) were the driving force for them to progress and get back all they had lost - and they did!

I am sure you will and your beautiful wife (I love her hair cut) will live long enough to see your great-grandchildren and beyond :D!

My grandmother is going to be a great-grandmother next year (my brother is going to be a father) and she's only 73 years old; so she's hopeful to see her great great-grandchildren ;).

I hope you are having a great time with your baby Emmi :D!

Cheers

Hi Max! I came across these acronyms while searching for reasons as to why couples are having or not having children.

DINKS: dual income no kids; DEWKS: dually employed with kids; SINKS: single income no kids; SIWKS: single income with kids.

As for us, we were DINKS for only a very short time!

It is also interesting to see that the age of the Australian mothers "has been steadily increasing over the past two decades, from a median age of 27.3 years in 1985 to 30.7 in 2005".

This can only be made worse by the current global financial crisis and job insecurity that is rampant these days. Just the other day, the Japanese tyre giant Bridgestone announced that it would close its Australian factory, leaving 600 people out of work.

I take it your parents have come through alright after losing everything in the revolution? It goes without saying that we both owe our parents a lot for bringing us into a world far more secure than what they had to put up with.

I'm glad you added, "my brother is going to be a father", otherwise I would have thought you were going to be a mum.

Congrats to your grandmother and brother. By the way, will you be doing any baby sitting when the time comes?

Take Care,
Peter

Hi Dorothy! Thank you for your comforting words and by the looks of things, I hope to be a very good grandparent, just like yourself!

Peter

Peter, the title says it all - family will be always first. This is such a nice photo of your family, and the baby, wow so so adorable. BTW similar thing happen to our family, our youngest sister (number 3) was the first to have children, they are 8 and 6, and me I have 1.5 year old, lol, I was the late replicator, lol. Anna :)

Peter 30/10/09 11:11 AM

Hi Anna! Yes, the title says it all! A blogging friend put me on to the creator of this image. They did extremely well considering they only had the photos I sent them to go on.

BTW, I was the first replicator out of all my brothers and sister. It came as a bit of a shock to my parents considering they thought I was going to be a religious brother!

Take Care,
Peter

Anna 2/11/09 5:27 PM

Peter you said: 'my parents considering they thought I was going to be a religious brother!'. Hey Peter it would be shocking for me if you did become a religious brother, lol, no no not you, lol, but if you did, it probably be fun to have you around. Anna :)

Peter 3/11/09 8:45 AM

Hi Anna! I was going to be a religious brother, but I discovered girls! So that was the end of that!

Take Care,
Peter
