Skin Cancer Nose No Boundaries: Part II

This is an update to my article titled “Skin Cancer Nose No Boundaries” that I posted on the 28th January, 2009. It entails the diagnosis of two basal cell carcinomas on my nose, subsequent treatments and then finally, Mohs Surgery.

To bring you up to speed, on the 12 January 2009 I had a bilobed flap repair to my nose immediately after the removal of a recurrent nodular Basal Cell Carcinoma.

After a number of requests to show how my nose looks after ten months of healing, I now present you with my new nose with a before and after view.

Mohs Surgery - 18 Jan 2009 Mohs Surgery - 24 Oct 2009

I am eternally grateful to “The Skin & Cancer Foundation Australia” (SCFA) located at Westmead, New South Wales, Australia for saving my nose.

Their practice, which I was referred to by my local skin cancer specialist, is affiliated with the University of Sydney, the University of NSW, St Vincent's Hospital, Westmead Hospital and the New Children's Hospital and are a specialised medical organisation dedicated to providing high quality services in the areas of dermatology and dermatopathology.

Peter, your nose looks GREAT! They did a wonderful job on it. Glad to see it turned out so well. :)

Peter 25.10.09

Hi Moonshadow! As I said in an earlier comment in my previous nose cancer post, if I used makeup, you might not even see the defect!

Yes, my doctor did a wonderful job and I will be forever thankful.

How's things with you? Hoping you are well!

Take Care,
Peter

Hi Rlbates and a big welcome to you. I've come across blogcarnival before but never submitted anything as I didn't think any of my posts would be good enough. But I did as you suggested and gave it a go. Thank you heaps!

Hey Peter you look probably 30 years younger with this nose, just like brand new. Glad that everything worked out for you in this matter.

Thanks for the update.

Anna :)

PS boy I was behind, lol

Peter 30.10.09

Hi Anna! Before I start on this reply, thanks heaps for all your comments. You really are a trooper and an inspiration.

Yes, my poor old nose. It's not out of the woods yet, with many more battles yet to come. I hope not, though!

Peter

Peter, your nose looks great!!! WOOT for the great skill in bringing the nose back to normal.

My niece just had skin cancer. It sure can hit at any age.

Blessings, JJ/Nancy

Peter 31.10.09

Hi JJ! It's not bad for an old noose, although I liked it the way it was before it was cut down in its prime!

Wow!
It looks great!! You have a beautiful nose, mate!

I love modern medicine :D!

Cheers

Peter 5.11.09

Hi Max and thank you! I thought of trading my nose in for a new one at the time but the "no's" won on a majority vote!

Take Care,
Peter

Peter,

LOL trading your nose? Thank God the no's won - it would've ruined God's original work :)...

Hi Peter,

I currently have an odd lesion on my nose that looks absolutely horrible.

I have been to see 3 surgeons to get an opinion on what are my best options of removal the lesion.

2 of them have suggested skin graft, while the other is suggesting an biloped flap repair.

All have said that my situation is difficult because I am only 22 years of age and my skin is clear so any scars from post surgery will look very obvious.

What is your opinion on both procedures?

Also your nose looks great, can I please get the details of the surgeon that performed the surgery for you.

Thanks

Jenny

Peter 14.1.10

Hi Jenny and welcome! I am sorry to hear of your current dilemma.

By the sounds of things you are doing the right thing in getting different opinions. Just a suggestion, if you are able to view images of the work done by these doctors, I think it will help you make up your mind.

Like you, I was not happy with the suggestion of a skin graft as most that I have seen were NOT to my liking, especially when it involves an area such as the nose.

My skin specialist referred me to a doctor that works at the Skin and Cancer Foundation Australia unit at Westmead. Their link is contained in this post. (Link number 2).

Perhaps you could mention their details to your current doctor.

If you have any other questions please do not hesitate to contact me again. My email address is contained in my profile link at the top of the page if that best suits you.

All the best and take care,
Peter

Peter. Thanks for creating your site. It helped me immensely when I went for surgery on two BCCs that I had on my nose, near to my right nostril.

I had skin grafts from my neck on both of them - when they were surgically removed. The area looked horrendous post-op as the skin grafts were kept in place by pieces of green sponge that were stiched into my nose on top of the grafts.

The sponge became bloody and the whole area looked looked like mould growing on my nose.

However, a week later the sponges were removed and the area started to heal. It's now 4 weeks since the op and the skin grafts look good.

However, I have no feeling in my right nostril. I presume the surgeon must have removed the nerve? Have you heard of this at all?

Once again many thanks for your site.

Dave Kemp, Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire, United Kingdom. Age 50.

Peter 29.8.10

Hi Dave and thank you for sharing your experience with me.

Yes, the loss of feeling happened to me as well. The good news is that full feeling returned after some months. Just took a while for the nerves to get back into shape.

BTW - Any idea on who's going to win the Ashes in 2011?

Take Care,
Peter

Hi Peter, thank you very much for your web site. I am expecting plastic surgery for BCC on the tip of my nose. Your description of the procedure and the excellent result helps me bear off my depression.
Paul

Peter 29.8.10

Hi Paul and thank you for visiting my site. Yes, I was very much the same leading up to my operation and while the dressing was on.

This dissipated once I knew that my nose was going to be alright. Wishing you all the very best and if you have any questions later on, please don't hesitate to get back to me.

Take Care,
Peter

Hi Peter,
You sure made me feel better about the 22 stiches that I'm having removed tomorrow. I have the exact same spot as you, only on my left side of my nose. Your recovery and scarless face is truly a blessing. Thanks for sharing.
Signed, Anita in sunny Sarasota.

Peter 28.10.10

Hi Anita and welcome. Hoping you're as happy with the results as I was.

Hi Peter
I had the same surgery done yesterday. Those needles sure do hurt.My cancer was misdiagnosed at first.I just thought something was'nt right so i went to another doctor who removed the cancer but warned that it might reappear later on.It did,and even knowing what could lay ahead i went back to the doctors and she put me onto a plastic surgeon.Just seeing your 2nd post and seeing how your nose has recovered has given me some relieve.Anyone who reads these blogs and has something they are not sure about, get it seen too before it is to late.Your a long time dead!!!Cheers Craig

Peter 1.12.10

Hi Craig and welcome! Hoping you're well and truly on the road to recovery. I had a melanoma misdiagnosed sometime ago with the first medical center doctor telling me it was an insect bite.

I'm only here now after getting a second opinion via someone who knew what they were doing.

Thank heavens you followed through on doing the same thing. Wishing you and your family a Merry Christmas.

Take Care,
Peter

Hi Camille and welcome. Hoping you are well and thank you for sharing your story. I am having further Mohs surgery late March 2011. I'll post another like this when it's all over - hoping and praying things turn out all right like it did with this one.

Dawn 21.3.12

Peter, wow! What a journey you've had. You look fabulous! And, have definitely given me hope.
I was diagnosed in Jan 2012 w/ BCC. Mine still looks rough though. Someone said I looked like I was in a cage fight. Another said my doctor must have been Edward Scissorhands. Sooooo, I'm curious about your massaging the area (did you say twice a day?). Did you apply warm compresses first and how long did you massage per session and for how man months?

Nades 6.5.12

Hi Peter,
I am about to have the same procedure done to my nose, but the flap is coming from my cheek. As I am going overseas in 3 months, I am a little worried what it will look like in such a short healing time. Did you have much swelling and if so how long did it take to subside. As I am a woman and a little vain, I am very worried about this. I wanted to leave the op until after I returned from my holiday, but doctor says no.

Peter 9.5.12

Hi Dawn. Please excuse me for the lateness of the reply; a lot is happening at home. As for the massaging, it was gentle and I think I used vit E cream to help out. Be guided by what your doctor has told you - it helped me greatly.

Peter 9.5.12

Hi Nades! With mine, I had a little swelling and it took some weeks to subside but all is looking good now, touch wood! Wishing you well with your operation.

Take Care,
Peter

Hello, Peter,

Thanks so much for sharing your experience. Yesterday found out I'm going to have Moh's surgery for a squamous cell in the center of my nose, and I'm trying to be optimistic. Looking at your pix and reading your comments truly helps.
