What Australian Bird is That

Bird photography is certainly one way to relieve the boredom while my face undergoes six weeks of Aldara skin cancer treatment. Living the life of a recluse during this time has had its benefits though. Through patience and sheer good luck this fine specimen popped up in front of my camera lens, but what Australian bird is that? It’s got me stumped, what about you?

Australian BirdWhat Australian bird is that? Common Koel

Prompted by Lynda Lehmann recently to showcase my photographs, this image of an unknown bird is the best by far. Now, if you know the birds common or scientific name, please leave your answer here.

UPDATE

My friend at Birds In Backyards has informed me that the bird is a Common Koel (Eudynamys scolopacea) – a member of the cuckoo order and on my reckoning an adult female, as it has been seen with an adult male. (blue-black in colour)

Some further checking reveals that it may be a Australian Koel (Eudynamys cyanocephalus) rather than an Asian, Black-billed or Pacific Koel – all of which come under the name, Common Koel.

Common name: common koel / cooee bird / rain bird / stormbird / eastern koel

I certainly have no idea, Peter, but it has beautiful plumage. Maybe we need to look up "birds of Australia" to find what it is. The tail feathers are really long! And it does look like a raptor--not that I actually know anything about avian classification.

Thanks for posting this. Let's see some more!

PS - I'm sorry to hear you have to go through more treatment for skin cancer. Hope the time passes quickly for you, so you can resume normal activities!

I wouldn't have a clue but he sure is cool, actually it's probably a she, and the male has some other beautiful colors on him! I'm so sorry for the recurrence. I thought you had that under control, what kind of treatment is Aldara?

Peter 27.1.11

Hi Lynda. I didn't need much prompting to get this one up. As soon as I saw the bird, I knew I had to blog about it, especially as I don't know its name. I've looked and Googled but no luck so far.

Two weeks down and four to go, for the treatment. Just got back from my specialist - wants me to stop treatment until Monday, so my face can settle down. I certainly needed that breather as the discomfort is verging on unbearable.

Take Care,
Peter

Hi Janeywan. Yes, it is pretty cool and something I've never seen in my entire life until now.

Aldara is a cream used to treat certain diseases of the skin, including skin cancers. The cosmetic result can be outstanding but the discomfort is extreme to say the least and progressively gets worse as time goes by. So much so, I've had to take annual and sick leave to get over it, mores the pity.

Thank you for asking and take Care,
Peter

Sorry to hear you're having to undergo more treatment. :(

I searched for your bird online but haven't found it yet. Excellent picture!

Thoughts & Prayers

Hi Moonshadow and thank you! Just finished up looking myself but no luck this end either. I suspect Lynda may be on the right track with it being some sort of raptor, going on its feet.

Still, I have plenty of time at the moment to track it down. As for the treatment, unfortunately its a lead up to more Mohs surgery on my nose - this time the other side.

Take Care,
Peter

Hi Peter, I guess someone figured out what bird it is. Sorry to hear about the treatment, but it better sooner, and you are trooper - you hang in there. Thank you so much for dropping by my snowy world - we have major snow storm coming over night, but like you said it is nothing compared to what flood, and the cycle is new news to me. Hope it will not affect where you live. Thanks for the heads up and you take care of yourself. How is little Emmi? She must be talking by now. I cannot emphasize enough how much she looks like you. Anna :)

Peter 2.2.11

Hi Anna! Good to see you here! As for the birds identification, I contacted "Birds in Backyards" and within a matter of minutes one good soul informed me it was a Common Koel.

The treatment is harsh but well worth the pain and suffering if it does its job properly.

The cyclone about to hit Queensland (Australia) is the biggest ever to hit our shores. The family we have up there have taken shelter on the ground floor.

We don't know the full extent of it until it reaches the coast about 10pm tonight.

Emmi and parents are doing well under the present conditions.

Take Care,
Peter

Hi Peter!

What, you are under treatment again? I didn't know this...and I am sorry to hear it.
Is everything fine with you, mate? Is this the same issue as before?

Anyway, speaking of the bird: gorgeous!!! So royal, isn't it?
I am glad Lynda encouraged you to do this :).

I wish you a great weekend, my friend. And take care!

Cheers

Hi Max! How's tricks? Now, if you Google "Aldara cream 5% (Imiquimod)" you'll get the drift of what my face and nose is going through, and on top of that I'm having more Mohs surgery to my poor old nose. Boy, if they cut any more out, I'll smell terrible. LOL, I think!

I'm now reminded of the saying, "Always keep on the bright side of life." Have a bonza weekend, Max.

Take Care,
Peter

Hi Peter!

"How's tricks?"

Everything is cool, mate, thanks :D.

I did google it and now I get a drift of what you are going through *nodding*. LOL LOL you kill me!
When is your next surgery (I want to send good vibes towards you).

You bet! We must always keep on the bright side of life...keep up the good spirits, Pete :D!

Thanks, and have a bonza week!

Hi Max! Yes, I'm having more Mohs surgery on my nose late March. Having nothing better to do locked away at home, I'm working on a post that details the effects of Aldara. More gory photos I'm afraid but hopefully it will help someone.

Take Care,
Peter

Max Coutinho 10.2.11

Peter,

Then I will be thinking of you and sending you good vibes from now until end of March :D.

Man, if being locked at home will benefit your health, then that's what you need to you (with a smile upon your face) ;).

Looking forward to reading your post!

Cheers
