Aldara Skin Cancer Treatment: A Patient’s Perspective
Why bare my soul and skin here?
Why Aldara?
2. Recommended by my treating doctor (Mohs surgeon and Dermatologist)
What’s Aldara?
An added benefit of Aldara treatment is that skin lesions not visible to the eye become visible and treated at the same time as the visible skin lesions.

Further updates will be forthcoming once my face and nose have fully recovered from the Aldara treatment. I will also be posting an article on my Mohs surgery.
One last thing, my Fujifilm FinePix S8000fd digital camera died so I’ll have to resort to using my father’s Box Brownie for future posts.

Wow, what a rapid response to the treatment!
Hope it's the last of your BCCs, Peter.
Hi Jayne. People react differently to Aldara; ranging from mild to severe. Hopefully by the end of the treatment I'll have back my baby skin! LOL.
Unfortunately I am condemned to a life of further BCCs. As they say, "Shit happens" but that's life.
Take Care,
Peter
Oh, Peter! That looks so terribly painful. :( Thank you for sharing with us.
I have a Brownie box that looks like the #2 in your link. It was my parents camera and the first one I ever took pictures with. I think my son had a hawkeye at one time. A friend in Canada took an old box camera and shot pictures with her nice new camera through the lens of the box camera and got some really nice old fashioned type pictures. Can you still get film for the Brownie? and then find someplace to develop it? We played with double exposures with the camera when my son was young. I still knew where there was a regular camera store then.
You just work on getting healed up. Thoughts & Prayers to you & your wife.
Hi Peter,
Impressive post. I would like to thank you for the information you provided, cause I had no idea.
About the pics: oh my sweet Lord...now I understand why you couldn't sleep and why you were in pain, man. I am so sorry, my friend. Good thing I am sending good vibes towards you :).
Now, let me tell you one thing: besides being a fairly handsome man you have a gorgeous nose; did you know that? Your mother is a perfectionist :) lol.
A bit of humour to offset the seriousness of this article...although I mean it about the nose.
I am with you and your wife in this hour.
May God help the New Zealanders as well!
Cheers
Hi Moonshadow. Yes, it was bloody painful but things are much better now. Only one and a bit weeks left for my nose treatment, thank heavens.
I found this place: brownie-camera.com and made some inquires about film but nothing yet. They do recommend JandC Photo - Kansas - on this page: brownie-camera.com/buyfilm.shtml - but that's about the best I can do.
Yes, my parents have tons of the old photos from box brownies and they're great. Thank you for your kind words.
Take Care,
Peter
Hi Max and thank you. Yes, it took a while and some effort to put this one together. Those HTML tables are a pain in the rear to get them looking right in all browsers. (I do not like Opera BTW)
Yes, I could feel your good vibes coming over, and, I should have mentioned that in my post, sorry.
Thank you for your compliment. I do notice that as people get older, not all mind you, their noses get bigger, but the way I'm going, with them chopping things off mine every now and then, I may side step that issue.
As for New Zealand, they need all the help they can get at the moment, and Australia, is doing it's very best to get them back on their feet.
Take Care,
Peter
Peter…
I commend you for this excellent article! I would like to say more about how pleased and impressed I am by your leadership in such a way but I know you are a humble man. So instead I have a question for you…
During this process there is certainly suffering involved, how have you coped with it?
Hi Livingsword and thank you. The fourth week of treatment is when all hell broke loose. Valium, my wife’s tendering loving care, staying indoors, Nurofen Plus, Panadol, sleeping tablets, writing and photographing local wildlife here and there and everywhere helped take the edge off the pain and discomfort.
I should mention here, Max was sending through good vibes to help me cope as well.
Now, knowing that my lesions would / may be removed all at once due to the treatment also lifted me when I was down.
Just one little op to go and I'll be looking forward to getting fit again.
Take Care,
Peter
Peter,
You are most welcome *bowing*.
"Yes, it took a while and some effort to put this one together. Those HTML tables are a pain in the rear to get them looking right in all browsers. (I do not like Opera BTW)"
I hear you. What? You do not like Opera?
"Yes, I could feel your good vibes coming over, and, I should have mentioned that in my post, sorry."
:D that is so generous of you; but there is no need - I just want you to feel as comfortable as possible and I will keep sending them towards you (until you finish your treatment) :D.
"Thank you for your compliment. I do notice that as people get older, not all mind you, their noses get bigger, but the way I'm going, with them chopping things off mine every now and then, I may side step that issue."
You're welcome. LOL yeah, some experience a mutation in their noses as they get refined with age. LOL LOL LOL that was a good one!
"As for New Zealand, they need all the help they can get at the moment, and Australia, is doing it's very best to get them back on their feet."
Indeed. It was quite a blow...
I wish you and your wife a peaceful weekend!
Cheers
Thank you for posting your treatment progression. 12/2009 I had MOHS surgery for a BCC on my upper right lip area - so thankful there is virtually no scar.
Had been watching what appeared to be the beginning of a fever blister that never developed ... reserched thoroughly and this could have been another form of BCC. Went to dermatologist who froze area but also offered the option to go through Aldara treatment. It seems like a smart thing to do. Two dots on the side of my nose and 4 large oozy places at corners of mouth and lower lip edge. I just don't care how it looks as long as I'm heading off something bad early on.
I wish you a full recovery with no further concerns!
Again, thank you for being so kind as to document your process for all of us.
Michele
After the treatment is there,no furthur treatment
or is this an ongoing thing. take care my friend
yout Mum is thinking of you
Hi Max! Opera? The web browser Opera that is, not the singing type. LOL. I have five more nose treatments left to go. I see my doctor on Tuesday, so I'll have more news about what he's going to do in the March nose operation.
Take Care,
Peter
Hi Michele! Welcome and thank you for your kind words. Scars, don't you just hate them. I have enough to fill the ship Queen Mary. Good news about your lip though.
All the best with your treatments and please let me know how you get on.
Take Care,
Peter
Hi Mum! As per our phone call, sorry if I've upset you with these images. I didn't want to bother you with what's been happening with me, as with time I'll get over it.
I have a nose operation in March and with this treatment hopefully it won't be an extensive one.
Thinking of you always.
Love, Peter
Peter, hi!
"Opera? The web browser Opera that is, not the singing type. LOL."
LOL my bad, sorry. Opera browser...hmmm...I have never worked with it. What are its mains flaws?
"I have five more nose treatments left to go. I see my doctor on Tuesday, so I'll have more news about what he's going to do in the March nose operation."
5 more? Oh, that must sound like an eternity...
Let's hope everything goes well on Tuesday :D.
Hi Max! Opera doesn't display HTML tables like the others. I have five web browsers all up, mainly to test how my blog displays for readers. Anyway, something else for me to learn so I can overcome my issues with Opera. Yes, big day tomorrow!
Take Care,
Peter
Oh Peter, you have been through so much. Thank goodness for pain aids and your wife's tender loving care. It's a good thing you have also had your photography and writing to take your mind off it.
The treatment looks very painful, with all those raw areas. They must hurt as much as 3rd degree burns. I'd imagine there's a lot of itching with the healing, too.
You are doing a very brave thing to let us in on
the specifics of your experience with skin cancers, and I thank you for it.
I had read long ago, when our daughter was small, about the high numbers of melanoma cases in Australia, especially Queensland. The reason given was the effacement of the protective ozone layer at that latitude.
I'm sorry you have had such a long and arduous bout and I hope and pray that you can complete treatment and then be done with it.
Again, you are very brave to share this and unselfish to be thinking about how doing so can help others, in the midst of your suffering through this grueling treatment.
Hi Lynda and thank you for your kind words - much appreciated.
As they say, "No pain, no gain." Yes, I can make light of it now! The face is well and truly on the mend and I'm glad I stuck with the treatment going on the results to date.
Another sad fact about melanomas is they're taking young lives as well as old.
Anyone reading this get your skin checked out now and don't go out in the sun without protection.
Take Care,
Peter
Hi Peter…
I was wondering how you are doing….
Hi Livingsword and thank you for asking, much appreciated. I'm feeling as flat as a tack at the moment. No right to complain though, with what's happening in Japan.
Take Care,
Peter
Hi Peter…
Certainly those in Japan are in my prayers but so also are you…take care and know you have friends far and wide…
Hi Livingsword. We have a saying here which I can use on you, "Thanks Mate!"
Take Care,
Peter
Peter, how are you doing now? All healed up? Been thinking about how much you've been going through...
Hi Lynda and thank you for asking. The redness is slowly going, thank heavens. I had my nose op on Monday and now waiting anxiously about how it will turn out after the bandages are removed. Touch wood everything turns out satisfactorily.
Take Care,
Peter
Hi
I found your website after looking for info about Aldara. Your photo's show how bad it gets, mine is on my chest, right between my bust, which hurts like hell, and it's all weeping and ulcerated, looks gross, but I've carried on til now, til I realised that I could rest from treatment if it got too much, which I didn't know til I found your website, so thanks for that. This stuff hurts! You are so brave having it all over your face!
Louise
Hi Louise and welcome. Just the other day my skin specialist asked me if I would go through Aldara treatment to my face again if ever I needed to. I told him I would going on the positive results of this treatment. Lets hope it doesn't come to that though! Now, if I'm brave so are you!
Take Care,
Peter
Peter:
I am getting ready to start this treatment soon. Were you able to work during treatment? I fly several times a week for work and I don't know if I will be able to do this. What are your thoughts on this?
Hi Anonymous and welcome. If I had to do it again I would, as the end result has been very good to date. For me, the first two weeks showed only minor reaction to the aldara. After that, as you can see from the pictures, a severe reaction occurred.
Not knowing your treatment regimen or you, I am unable to say what you'll encounter. Some people react very little going on my research and some go the other way.
As for work, I took annual and sick leave, and didn't leave the house for about 10 weeks.
The only other advise I can give, is to see what happens and if the reaction is really bad take sick leave. Wishing you the very best.
Take Care,
Peter
I started the Aldara Sept 8th; had Moh's 2 years ago on my nose and now there is more bcc; I look like poo-poo (didn't want to say the other word which would more aptly fit)...other side of the nose is rare meat and scabs, plus a few more on the Moh's side, and my eyebrow. Can't go out although Halloween is coming...it's pretty scary to look at...not small lesions! Elaine Smith
Hi Elaine. I feel your pain. Hoping you recover soon and thank you so much for sharing your experiences.
Take Care,
Peter
Thank you so much for your post. I'm in week 4 of treatment on my entire chest and it has been ugly and uncomfortable. However; I feel a bit relieved knowing that the cream is attacking the problem areas...I have counted about 35 so far. I've had 2 sites of basal cell, 2 squamous cell and 1 melanoma in the last 90 days, so this treatment is the next step. After my chest, it's onto my back, then each arm. I really appreciate your photos and it looks like you've healed beautifully. Your bravery in posting the pictures helps all of us who are going through this process.
Hope you are well.
Thank you

Hi Debbie and welcome. My, you are going through the wars. So sorry to hear about your bout with cancer. If only I could do something for you. Yes, a prayer won't go astray, so I'll say one for you.
Aldara, while it was a right royal pain, it worked wonders for me. If I had to go through it again, I would.
You sound like a real trooper with enough courage for a thousand plus. Thank you so much for contacting me, yes, your kind words mean a great deal to me, again, thank you. Get well soon alright!
Take Care,
Peter
Hi Peter,
Its been great to see a real life perspective on the life impact of Aldara. I have recently gone through a similar experience, although none on the face thankfully so I was able to live a normal existance. I'm going through a similar process of writing and capturing it online for others to see. I've only started, but you can see my story here:

Thank you for your posts! I am getting ready to start a 4 week aldera treatment in a couple weeks - trying to get a number of appointments, etc done in advance so I don't have to leave the house much and hopefully work mostly from home. Was it painful? I have a toddler and worry about being able to keep up with him, too. Any other advice to get through it? Did you take any specific supplements or vitamins to help your immune system?
Hi Peter, Thanks for all this very useful information. Am supposed to start an Aldara treatment on my leg on a BCC next week. Have just spent the last month recovering from a removal(second time in 2yrs)of an invasive BCC + SCC that was right over my Achilles and heading towards the ligaments and tendons so it had to go, needed a skin graft and the wearing of a moon boot for a month, not fun over Christmas. I have had about 20 removed over the last 6yrs and my skin specialist said he is sick of cutting them out as when he does one another pops up so is giving Aldara a go. I have only just returned to work this week and cannot have any more time off, and from what I have read on the forums this cream has some terrible side effects (dizziness, burning skin, pussy and bloody sores in other areas of the body, affected eyesight even diarrhoea)did you have any of these other symptoms? I am reluctant about the cream and might ask him to just cut it out, or even give apple cider vinegar or cansema a go as am so, so over it. As a BCC is not a melanoma why cant they just stay there? Anyhow Peter really appreciate your postings.
Regards
Michelle (avid coconut oil user of the 80's)
Hi Chris. Sorry for the late reply and wishing you well with your treatment and your blog
Take Care,
Peter
Hi Anonymous and sorry for the late reply. Take each day as it comes and try not to worry. If ever I had a problem I just contacted my treating doctor and saw my GP if ever I needed anything in the way of medications to help me get through it.
Did I take any specific supplements or vitamins to help my immune system? No.
Take Care,
Peter
Hi Michelle and sorry for the late reply. Both you and I have been through the wars without a doubt. As you can see in the pictures I was not a pretty sight.
I had the backup of my treating specialist and GP throughout this course, and saw both a number of times while undergoing the treatment.
Prior to this treatment my BCC's, depending on their nature, required surgical removal.
Take Care,
Peter
Hello Peter, I want to thank you so very much for recording what aldara therapy would do. I have had my nose cut on 4 times, then MOHS on my R cheek from eye to jaw and MOHS just under my R ear. I finally refused to let them cut on me anymore and one kind doctor told me to try aldara. I used it just on my nose and was surprised at the cancer it brought up and killed. Just recently I felt a lump under my eye where they had done the MOHS, I started praying and came across your site, it gave me the courage to use aldara all over my face. Oh, the pain, swelling, itching sometimes unbareable, that is when I look at your site again, to know that it is normal and in 5 weeks will be better. Thank you for your help, I thank GOD for people like you that aren't afraid to help others. Bless You, Barbara
By the way Peter, I forgot to say the cancer attacking my face is squamous cell. My first post was 1/29/12 as anonymous but my name is Barbara. Bless you
Thanks for your post and pics. I'm into week 3 of Aldara and I'm resting due to a complete facial outbreak like your week 4 pics. the one thing I never did was use before bed and wash off in the AM. I always apply in AM and leave on all day and night. I'll try your way when I'm back up and running next week. But for now, I'm waiting for lesions to heal and swelling to reduce. Sad to see you going through it but also glad to see the pics so I know my experience is similar to another's. Thanks for the diary. BTW, my arms and legs don't seem to respond as well as my face and neck. You?
Thanks for sharing your story and pics. I'm in week 3 and am suffering from a similar reaction to your week 4. I am resting while my lesions and swelling improve. I will try your schedule with applying at night and cleaning off 8 hours later, I have always applied in AM after my shower and left on until the next day's shower. Perhaps that's too long of a time. I fell like the reactions and lesions worsen as I get older. Been doing this for 10 years on and off. But my legs and arms do not seem to respond as well to the Aldara, yours?
Peter,
Thanks for your site. I just started Aldara this week on Monday My sBCC is on the tip of my nose only. I am trying to find out how many days went by until you started seeing any sign of the medicine working? Today will be day five of treatment and nothing yedyt.
Thanks

Hi Peter,
Thanks for your pictures and advice. I am at the end of week 3 of using Aldara on my forehead. I can’t believe the cancer it has highlighted that was not visible before treatment. I am 39 this year and shocked that I am already having to treat myself for skin cancer. I am very fair skinned and grew up in Zambia and don't think my parents worried too much about sun protection. My forehead looks horrendous and I don't enjoy leaving the house though a cap fortunately covers most of it. I am a busy mom and need to fetch and carry my kids from school and sport. My son loves cricket so I am pleased I have this early warning to protect his skin during those long days in the sun. I do not have any visible BCC's on my nose but am considering using Aldara on it just to make sure as I think surgery is particularly complicated on the nose. What do you think?

Hi Barbara and sorry for the very late reply. A lot has been happening here at home. Hoping by now that things are fine. Thank you so much for your kind comment.

Hi Marah and sorry for the very late reply. A lot has been happening here at home. Hoping you are well now. My doctor, to date, will not use aldara on my legs due to a poor success rate.
Take Care,
Peter
Hi Cindy and sorry for the very late reply. A lot has been happening here at home. Sound like a broken record, don't I.
It took about five to seven days for signs to show.
Hoping you are well and take care,
Peter
Hi Tamsin and welcome. Sorry to hear about your bout with Aldara. As for my kids, I preach to them about keeping out of the sun!
As for Aldara on your nose, please see your skin specialist first.
Here we need to see a skin specialist, and if required a prescription to buy and use it; with regular checks during treatment.
Wishing you well and take care,
Peter
Thanks Peter,
I will definitely consult with my dermatologist, who prescribed Aldara for my forehead, before I use it anywhere else!
I was so pleased to find your site after some of the scary information I found on the internet regarding Aldara.

Good to hear Tamsin and thank you so much. BTW If I have it right - Happy Mother's Day.
